Byron Russell, Head of Ingenta Connect, recently participated in an industry event organised by BookMachine in collaboration with Ingenta. The event was designed to be an informal discussion with networking and refreshments for scholarly and academic publishers in Oxford and the wider area.
Byron chaired a panel, which included Charlie Rapple, Sales & Marketing Director and Co-founder of Kudos; Duncan Campbell, Director, Digital Licensing and Sales Partnerships with John Wiley & Sons, and Phil Jones, Director of Publishing Innovation, Digital Science.
A lively and stimulating discussion took place where the entire panel gave their views on disruptive elements they have observed in scholarly publishing in the last 20 years and how scholarly publishers have responded. They also addressed the demise of consortia deals and rise of new models of acquisition. They discussed the rise of content sharing and tools such as Unpaywall and gave their views on where legitimate access to content ends and piracy begins.
The panellists drew on their own past and current experience and expertise and covered positive, negative and challenging aspects on the topic so that the audience could come away with a better understanding of the issues scholarly publishing face and an appreciation of technical and other solutions to help them
